Our Mission
To develop disciples, who develop disciples, who develop…you guessed it, disciples…
- Refuge is the High School Ministry of Summit View Church.
- We are made up of students grades 9-12, from all over Clark County.
- Our ministry meets Wednesday nights from 7-9 p.m. at our church building.
Students build meaningful relationships, participate in team building competitions (an occasional game of frozen fish floor hockey, just kidding!), and seek to understand how God is relevant to our culture and everyday lives. We hope that at Refuge students can find relief from the pressures of life and a safe place to ask the tough questions about their existence. We hope that they can see that God is not some distant force detached from time, but that He is closer than the very air we breathe. We provide opportunities for seeking students to ask questions in optional discussion groups at the end of the evening.
Campus Teams
On the TV show "The Simpsons," the family fought all of the time but out of their common bond they put up with each other's company. On the TV show "Cheers" the friends loved each other's company, but they never hung out outside of the bar, which was the common and comfortable meeting place. But on the "Cosby Show," the family was bonded on a deeper level. When Theo had a game, the whole fam was there cheering him on. When Vanessa broke up with her boyfriend the whole fam was there to offer words of encouragement and comfort. They enjoyed each other's company and stuck by each other through thick and thin. Our goal is "Cosby". We recognize that this generation is starving for meaningful, real relationships. Campus teams are made up of students that come from the same campus. The purpose is that each team would become a "family" of friends who share a significant spiritual mission within the context of Refuge and apart from it. It is our belief that students are looking for purpose in life. We work to enable students to find their individual, God-given purpose as they serve as a part of their team. Students experience meaningful relationships, as they work together with teammates to introduce their friends to Jesus.
Reaching The Unchurched
We believe that high school is a vital time in life. The decisions made during these years have a profound effect on the outcome of a person's life, and the pressures that confront students during this stage in their lives shape their worldview. Therefore, it is our goal to see every high school student have the opportunity to enter into a relationship with their Creator and Savior, Jesus. It is our desire to see each Christian student gain the proper worldview, heart and desire to see their unchurched friends become a disciple of Christ.
Camps & Retreats
Throughout the year, we generally have one weekend missions trip, one weekend retreat and our week-long summer camp.
- Our missions trip, "The Mission" (very creative name, huh?), is on Veterans Day weekend in November and focuses on serving people who are less fortunate than ourselves.
- "Avalanche," our winter retreat in January, is outreach-focused and for everyone!
- The Great Escape, our huge high school summer camp, happens the the first full week after school is out.
